A recent security audit for women’s safety done by the Mumbai police has revealed that there are as many as 437 isolated spots in the city which are considered to be unsafe for women. While east region has maximum such spots, west region has the least unsafe spots, police sources said.
The city was left shocked in August 2013, after two gang-rape cases came to light at Shakti Mill in Mahalaxmi. This prompted the police to identify the places that were not frequented by people and could be used as dens by anti-social elements.
In 2013, a dedicated police team was formed to identify isolated spots and places unsafe for women. The data compiled then had revealed that there were 272 such spots in the city. However, the survey was found to be faulty and another survey was carried out in March 2014, which revealed that there were more than 600 isolated spots in the city. Instructions were then given to the local police to coordinate with concerned authorities and to fix the problems of setting up electric poles and CCTV cameras at such spots,” said the officer.
“The places include parks, gardens, under construction buildings and creek areas among others,” said a police source. As many as 437 new isolated spots have come to light in the city in a recent audit conducted by the police. “There are 437 isolated spots in the city. A meeting will be conducted to address issues of women’s safety and measures needed to be taken with regards to the isolated spots,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
