Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has highlighted that over 14,600 CCTVs are installed across their network, underscoring its status as one of the safest travel options in Delhi and its neighbouring areas. This statement followed a recent letter from the Delhi Police, which urged the DMRC to implement measures to enhance security and prevent suicides on their premises.
DMRC is one of the safest means of travel in Delhi-NCR with a massive cover of over 14,600 CCTVs and policing through notified police stations under the jurisdiction of Delhi Metro rail police across all its lines,” the DMRC said in the statement.
The DMRC informed that its extensive CCTV coverage, combined with police presence from designated stations under the Delhi Metro Rail Police, contributes to its reputation for safety. “We are committed to addressing any remaining dark spots by identifying and covering them, and have previously undertaken similar exercises to install additional CCTVs,” the DMRC added.
A recent survey report from the Delhi Police is currently being reviewed to determine the feasibility of its recommendations. The DMRC plans to collaborate with the Delhi Police to develop a timeline for implementing these proposals and will keep them informed of progress.
The Delhi Police’s letter had outlined several areas of concern: improving CCTV surveillance of railway tracks, enhancing lighting in dark areas, trimming tree branches near metro stations, increasing guard presence on platforms, and installing platform screen doors (PSD). Additionally, the letter referenced two incidents of “mysterious” graffiti found on train coaches at Yamuna Bank yard and near Shahdara metro station earlier this year.
