Vision-Box has rolled out a biometric facial recognition and digital identity management pilot for seamless passenger experience at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport in Italy, for passengers flying from Rome to Amsterdam. The Seamless Flow One-ID six-month pilot was rolled out with the support of ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, and the State Police, making Fiumicino Airport the first in Italy to initiate biometrics-based security and self-boarding checks.
Passengers who opt-in for biometric facial recognition identification will benefit from an end-to-end self-service experience. Fiumicino Airport says it processed some 43 million passengers in 2018. Passenger flow will be managed by Vision-Box Orchestra, which operates under E.U. Data Privacy Regulations.
The traveler’s biometric facial features are collected by a smart IoT device, which also measures feature quality and gathers the information in the passport and boarding pass. Edge cameras will then link the face to the information, making documents and boarding passes redundant.
The biometric information is only temporarily processed to identity passengers, no data is saved because the information is deleted after boarding. The entire system delivers a seamless departure process.
“Vision-Box is extremely proud to accompany Aeroporti di Roma Fiumicino in their Digital Transformation program in the world of Seamless Travel, offering a premium passenger-centric experience to participating travelers,” said Miguel Leitmann, Vision-Box CEO. “Together we aim at establishing the practical foundations of IATA One-ID for Italy by leveraging our market knowledge and worldwide real-life expertise in simplifying the lives of passengers by using biometrics in a responsible and scalable manner.”
