Ultraviolet-based tunnels to disinfect check-point trays and baggage, mobile UV towers to disinfect surfaces in the terminal area and handheld UV devices to clean your laptop and other devices in addition to passenger trolley disinfection systems and walk-in shoe sanitiser mats. This will be the new normal at Delhi’s IGI airport as the Centre reviews the airport’s preparedness to resume regular commercial passenger flight operations from the national capital.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), that manages the Indira Gandhi International Airport, has installed ultra-violet tunnels at Terminal-3 of the airport to help disinfect passenger baggage. The prototype that has gone through rigorous checks has been installed at the baggage belt area.
This UV-based disinfection process will be carried out at the time the passenger hands over the baggage for check-in and then when he/she reclaims it at the destination. A live CCTV feed of the UV scanning process mounted at Delhi’s Terminal-3 Baggage Reclaim hall will allow passengers to see the disinfection process.
In a statement, DIAL said, “DIAL has been working round the clock during this COVID-19 crisis with the sole aim of keeping its passengers safe at any cost. Since trolleys and baggage of the passengers can be a medium of the spread of the infection, DIAL has developed a number of UV technology based machines and similar disinfection tunnels that will help disinfect various touchpoints of the passengers.” DIAL has also developed a state-of-the-art facility that will involve a disinfection process for all trolleys before passenger use. As for trays that passengers use, they too will undergo a UV-based clean-up to make them safe for touch.
To enhance passenger safety and comply with Covid-19 safety measures, mobile disinfection towers have also been developed and provided at the airport to disinfect various locations of Delhi airport’s terminal buildings. These moveable towers will be placed in properly cordoned areas of the terminals, where UV lamps will be operated and disinfection will be done.
In another unique measure, shoe sanitiser mats have been placed at strategic places at the airport. These mats are soaked with a chemical that will disinfect passengers’ shoes. Besides all these measures, sensor-based taps in passenger washrooms, foot-operated sanitiser dispensers, sensor-based drinking water and pedal-operated drinking water fountains have also been installed for contact-less usage. DIAL is also in the process of installing 336 automatic hand sanitiser dispensers, which are battery or electric-operated, at the T3 for frequent use by passengers.
