Escaping from crime scene is likely to be of little help for offenders in the Diamond City. Surat, which already has the country’s biggest CCTV network of 604 cameras, has now got a high-tech facial recognition system. NEC India has provided the real-time policing technology for the new system. “Surat is the first city in India to have such an advanced surveillance technology. Our face recognition system is efficient enough to identify an offender even if he has got a plastic surgery done,” said Koichiro Koide, managing director, NEC India.
Mostly used in forensic investigation, the technology can enhance poor quality latent face images, search for them in the database of mug-shots and locate potential the suspects. Another important part of the system is integration of existing video surveillance systems and matching faces in real-time against a watch list of individuals to trigger an alert. The system has been installed at seven locations including Surat railway station and central bus depot, said Rakesh Asthana, City Police Commissioner.
Besides, face recognition, Surat will also have a number plate recognition and vehicle speed violation detection system that will rein in speed demons. All three surveillance systems were launched by Chief Minister Anandi Patel. Innovative, a city-based IT firm, is working in collaboration with NEC and Surat police.
