Study underway to install AI cameras in Cambodian prisons

The Ministry of Interior in Cambodia is considering an initiative to install smart security camera systems (AI) in Prey Sar Correctional Centre 1 (CC1) to strengthen the security in the institution.

According to the General Department of Prisons’ Facebook page, Lieutenant General Nuth Savna, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Prisons (GDP) at the Ministry of Interior, and director of the Correctional Centre 1, received and discussed with the technical officers of the working group for the security system in prisons nationwide.

The discussion involved planning the strategic locations and necessary quantities of cameras both inside and outside the prisons, as well as surrounding areas. This initiative aims to prepare the installation in the near future to strengthen security and ensure enhanced safety within the prisons.

Kheang Sonadin, Spokesman of the General Department of Prisons at the Ministry of Interior, said yesterday that, currently, the installation of the smart camera system at the prison is still in the study phase and has not yet been implemented.

“We are currently in the study phase, which involves collaboration between the technical team from the ministry’s Department of Digital Technology and Media and the General Department of Prisons. They are working together to determine what type of cameras should be installed and where they should be placed.” He stated that the ministry will use Correctional Centre 1 as the first site for the implementation of the project.

“Previously, cameras were installed in prisons across the country. However, the installation was done by the individual units and not as part of a programme implemented by the ministry,” Sonadin said. “When we successfully implement them at CC1, we will expand the installation programme to all prisons across the country, funded by the ministry,” he added.

Sonadin emphasised that the security system is being installed to ensure security operations and will not infringe upon the privacy rights of inmates. He stated that this initiative enhances the roles of prison officers, as well as maintaining security and order in the institutions.
