Part of the security at the international airports of Cyprus will be assigned to the private sector, Ministers of Transport and Justice, Marios Demetriades and Ionas Nicolaou have announced. The issue was discussed at the Parliamentary Committee on Communication and Works in the presence of the two Ministers. Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou said that by assigning to a private company duties in some sectors (luggage and passenger traffic) a total of 110 police officers will be freed to work in other areas related to airport security.
This measure, he said, will cut government expenditure by 650,000 Euro per year. In addition, he said that due to global terrorist threats, the government has designated 120 additional members of the National Guard to guard the airports. In his statement, Minister of Transport, Communication and Works, Marios Demetriades said that the aim is to increase the level of security in Cyprus’ airports. He added that some of the security services will be assigned to the private sector. “The aim of our efforts is to increase the level of security in Cyprus’ airports, and I believe that we all agree on that, the government and the members of the Parliamentary Committee”, he said.
