In a bid to curb increasing incidents of land grabbing, Rawalpindi police chief Muhammad Ahsan Younas has decided to register private security guards of all the private housing societies and their weapons with police stations concerned, informed sources on Tuesday.
He also chaired a meeting to review police action against the owners and directors of all legal and illegal housing societies for their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
The meeting approved steps to make all the police stations’ heads active for registration of details of security guards of private housing societies such as their permanent and temporary addresses, the family members and the weapons and licenses they have in their hands, sources said.
Sources added the City Police Officer (CPO) Muhammad Ahsan Younas has decided to bring all the housing societies’ owners and their security guards into an official net after the intelligence agencies shared reports that most of housing societies are harbouring hard-core criminals and illegal Afghan nationals under garb of security guards to beat their opponents and to grab lands illegally. These criminals and illegal Afghan nationals take no time to kill, injure or kidnap any person over land dispute,” sources said.
Chakri, Sihal, Siham, Balgar Mujahid, Rajgan, Dhulial, Chontra, Dhala, Khasala, New International Airport, Hameedan Chokwy, Chach, Taxila and Wah Cantt are the areas where hundreds of housing societies are flourishing and most of the owners of these housing societies have employed private guards, sources said adding that no one knows where these guards come from and what is their track record.
With the presence of these guards, the ratio of cases of murders, attempted murders, kidnapping and land grabbing is very high, they said. To overwhelm the mafias, the CPO has made his mind to register the details of all private security guards and the weapons they are lifting with police stations concerned, they said.
CPO Muhammad Ahsan Younas, when contacted, confirmed that he has issued directions to divisional SPs to convert the SHOs to register the strengths of private guards and the weapons they are carrying with police stations conceded. “This step will help in reducing the crime rate as well as murder and attempted murder cases over land dispute in the city.”
