The civic administration has send out notices to buildings that do not follow fire norms, yet, it has failed to ensure that its schools are safe in case of a fire, an RTI query has revealed. Among the 453 schools either redeveloped or constructed by the civic school infrastructure cell, only 207 have fire extinguishers, while their installation is proposed in 87 schools. This means at least 246 schools lack adequate fire safety measures. The civic school infrastructure cell was created to look after repair work on civic school buildings
RTI activist Sharad Yadav had sought the information recently.”You cannot accept that a civic body with a mammoth budget of almost Rs 33,000 crore does not have fire safety measures in place,” said Yadav. Corporator and Education Committee Chairman, Ritu Tawade said she has been following up with the authorities about the need for fire audits in civic schools. However, officials said that fire extinguishers were in place based on the school’s capacity.
