Residents in east and outer Delhi areas can look forward to better redressal of their grievances as L-G Najeeb Jung has approved a proposal to create two new police districts in Rohini and Shahdara. Apart from the new districts, seven sub-divisions will be created. The L-G has forwarded the proposal to the Delhi government for notification. Once notified, the national capital will have 13 police districts and 47 sub-divisions. Currently, there are 40 police sub-divisions, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and 11 police districts that are headed by Deputy Commissioners (DCPs).
A senior police officer said the decision to create two new districts and seven sub-divisions was taken to check rising crime in eastern and outer Delhi areas. Police records show that each district registered 15,000 to 18,000 FIRs every year besides thousands of complaints on various matters.
The two new districts will be Rohini and Shahdara. While the existing outer district will be renamed as Rohini district, Shahdara will be a new district altogether. The new outer district, consisting of areas from outer, west and southwest Delhi, will have five sub-divisions – Najafgarh, Nangloi, Paschim Vihar, Mundka and Sultanpuri.
The Rohini district will have four sub-divisions – Bawana, Alipur, Samaipur Badli, and Rohini. The Shahdara district will have areas from east and northeast Delhi such as Vivek Vihar, Krishna Nagar, Mansarovar Park and others. The seven new sub-divisions will be Mayapuri, Chhawla, Mundka, Paschim Vihat, Nand Nagri, Mayur Vihar, and Barakhambha Road.
Expansion of the residential pockets in the city and the rapid growth in population were other important factors that prompted the city police to propose more administrative centres. Senior police officers said people living in eastern and outer parts of the city were facing difficulties as they had to travel a long distance to meet their area DCP for redressal of their grievances. Vice-versa, it was also difficult for one DCP to take care of such a large area and high number of cases. Officials said with the new districts and divisions coming up, it would become easier for the people to get their grievances addressed by the police.
