National highways seem to have become the new favourite crime spots for offenders and criminals. Whether it is the infamous Bulandshahr rape case or the recent Jewar gang rape case, the security on national highways has once again come to the forefront. Keeping in view the current situation on most highways of the country, the Home Ministry is back with the proposal of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) taking over the national highway security.
Along with the Ministry Of Home Affairs (MHA), the road transport ministry has come up with a list of highways that need vigilance from CISF. The CISF at present provides security to sensitive locations like airports and metros and is not expected to extend its territory to national highways. In 2001, MHA had proposed the CISF as the security agency for National Highway 8 (Delhi-Jaipur). The ministry had also sent the proposal to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), but sources say the plan was put on hold in 2002 as states did not encourage the intervention
