The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has initiated the process of installing CCTV cameras in all its depots and bus stations across the State. The corporation has formed a committee of senior officers to finalise the specifications for the products to be installed. The incident of a clash between youngsters at the KSRTC bus station in Hassan in broad daylight on June 21, has highlighted the need for CCTV cameras and constant vigilance at bus stations. Following the incident, many people had raised doubts about security at bus stations.
B.N.S. Reddy, Director for Security and Vigilance (KSRTC), during his recent visit to the city, had discussed the issue and briefed the officers on how to beef up security. He said that the KSRTC would install CCTV cameras soon. Mr. Reddy said, “We have begun the process to procure cameras and install them in all KSRTC depots and bus stations. A committee, comprising technical experts and senior officers has been formed to finalise the products.”
The committee has had two demonstrations on the functioning of CCTV cameras sourced from different manufacturers. “We are looking for high-quality products with good night vision features. Based on the committee’s report, the KSRTC board will call for the tender and invite quotations,” he said. The Hassan police have also held meetings with KSRTC officials to discuss the clash at the bus station. They also felt the need to install CCTV cameras and to monitor happenings in the place constantly. Meanwhile, Hassan MLA H.S. Prakash offered to provide the cameras from the City Municipal Council funds.
