D.C. leaders in Washington are hoping for more security cameras around the District, and they are offering incentives for property owners to have them installed. Under a bill brought forward by Council member Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, the city would help with the cost of security camera systems. The council passed the bill unanimously. The mayor still needs to sign the bill but is expected to do so. “It is clear that security cameras deter crime and help MPD (Metropolitan Police Department) hold individuals accountable for criminal acts by adding extra eyes on the street,” Allen said in a statement. As long as property owners register their cameras with police, they can receive rebates of up to $200 per camera installed. The overall financial cap is set at $500 for residential properties and $750 for businesses, nonprofits, or religious institutions.
