Linking Road malls are violating fire safety rules: BMC

An inspection by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revealed that several malls around the Linking Road area in Mumbai are violating the fire safety rules. The team from the civic body examined Shreeji Plaza, Link Corner, Crystal Shoppers Paradise, Link Square and New Beauty Square. At one of the malls the team found that the owner had constructed an additional floor without permission. BMC plans to issue notices to these establishments.  The most common violations are conversion of basement parking into shops or storage areas and operating stores from illegal mezzanine floors.

Recently a fire broke out at Kennilworth Mall on Linking Road. Fire brigade personnel said that several illegal alterations had been made to the shops. The unauthorized units in the basement obstructed firefighting. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had held a review meeting and directed inspection of all malls following an accident.
