Delhi Police plans revamp of beat policing to boost Capital’s law-enforcement

Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi wants a complete revamp of the Delhi Police, from the top brass to beat policing. According to cops, various changes will take place in the coming three to four months which will be a boon for Delhiites and policing across the national Capital. The backbone of Delhi Police — beat policing — will undergo a revamp. Officers are claiming that once all the proposals are implemented, there will be at least four policemen available all the times at beats, even if others are busy in various jobs.

The aim is to address instances where beats remain locked or are without cops.
A few new ranks may also be introduced to strengthen the policing system.  According to the police, every district was asked to submit a revamp proposal for beats. In the coming days, districts will have lesser beats with more cops. Confirming the move, Delhi Police Public Relations Officer Rajan Bhagat said that this step will not only benefit the public, but will also help to improve policing.

“This rearrangement of beat system will directly help the masses. After this shake-up, cops will be able to focus more effectively on their beat areas and that will improve policing,” Bhagat said.  Sources said there is an acute shortage of staff at the lower level that forced the seniors to revamp beat policing. According to a top police official, a sub-inspector-level officer will have few beats and will be responsible for crime and other law and order issues in his or her respective area. Apart from beat policing, Delhi Police will have two more districts, apart from the existing 11,  which will be announced in a couple of months.
