Coimbatore Corporation: Ensure fire safety before giving licence

The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department has urged the health wing of the Coimbatore Corporation to check restaurants and health establishments for fire safety compliance when they renew their Dangerous and Offensive Trade licence. Now, it is a second agency that gets into the picture to ensure compliance with fire safety norms, besides the regular checks and audits conducted by the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department, besides checks at the time of issuing an NOC and also at the time of renewing the fire licence.

The department has also asked the field staff in the health wing to carry out door-to-door inspection to ascertain compliance. The sanitary supervisors in the wards will carry out the check to identify those establishments that do not have the safety compliance. The field staff will then make a note of such establishments, send the number to the health wing so that the Corporation has an idea of the total number of restaurants and health establishments that stand in violation of the rules. The sources say that the inspection will begin soon. The corporation issues Dangerous and Offensive Trade licences and renews them once a year for all commercial establishments. Without the licence, no commercial establishment, including eateries, motels, restaurants, diagnostic labs, clinics and hospitals can legally function in the city.
