To ease out air travel hassles, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is deploying facial recognition tech which can replace the need for a ticket or even authentication! As a part of the ‘Digi Yatra’ initiative, patrons can apply for a Digi Yatra ID by providing details and facial recognition data. This information can be used at security gates for quick verification without the need to show your boarding ticket.
Those who will be using this for the first time will have to do a one-time verification at the departure airport. Once cleared, the biometric data will be stored in the Digi Yatra ID.
The Hyderabad airport also ran a trial earlier this week at airport entry points, where passengers travelling to destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Vizag and Vijayawada. Airport officials revealed certain stats around the usage of this facial recognition tech where 70% of the users who signed up for this, used it on the first day. They eventually plan on rolling out this option to all domestic travellers.
This implementation will not only make the entire flying process more convenient, but also save time of the airport staff. Normally, there are CISF personnel stationed at each stage of check-in to verify and authenticate a person’s identity which wastes a considerable amount of time.
“If the pilot is successful, it will be used for security checks as well. Instead of displaying the boarding pass, passengers can just look into the camera to ascertain their credentials. If found genuine, the system will automatically clear their passage towards boarding”, an airport official explained
