Gujarat Education Board to rely on CCTV, discontinue surprise checks of exam centres

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided that there would be no flying squad for surprise checks during the semester-II examination of class XI Science stream. The board will monitor all the 131 examination centres from the control room, which has been set up at its headquarters, in Gandhinagar. This is the first time the board is monitoring the entire examination live and has decided not to send officials for surprise checks.

Board officials said there would be a staff of about 50 people, who would constantly move from one examination hall to another in the taluka and district under their supervision. There would be a team of another 33 officials, who would be sitting in the DEO office monitoring the CCTV feeds. Sources said that collector offices would also have separate live feeds.

The board had, in 2015, implemented the system on a pilot basis in 25 schools of Ahmedabad district, and at some highly sensitive centres which had precedents of copying. It had arranged for live feeds during the class XII examination from all examination centres where class XII Science and general stream examinations were conducted.

Officials said that in many cases, it had been observed that cameras had been turned off during exams enabling students to copy. Now, live feeds of all centres would be observed from Gandhinagar control room, and from there messages would be sent to concerned supervisors to check spots. Hence, chances of local ‘settings’ between students, teachers, and supervisors will be removed. Officials in the education department said that the board official sitting in Gandhinagar will be able to point out the exact row and the dresses of the students copying or talking. The board will inform the supervisor present, who would than take action against the students.
