The Centre has said it is setting up three committees to formulate guidelines to help the Union labour ministry curb industrial accidents. While the first committee will look into safety parameters across industries, docks and ports, the second will evaluate fire safety measures, and the third will recommend rules for the building and construction sector.
The recommendations will be part of the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, which is one among the four labour codes. The government has merged 13 existing labour legislations to the safety code, and aims to simplify the laws regulating occupational safety in establishments. “The central government has constituted expert committees of industry and subject experts from both public and private sectors across the country to review the existing rules and regulations on safety, health and working conditions standards, pertaining to factories, docks and construction work,” the ministry said.
At least 6,500 employees have died on duty in factories, ports, mines and construction sites over five years, say reports.
