Euralarm, representing the electronic fire and security industry, has welcomed the adoption by the European Parliament’s TRAN Committee of the report on new challenges and concepts for the promotion of tourism in Europe. Especially of interest is the Amendment 184 to the report calling for a consistent approach of fire safety and carbon monoxide safety in tourism accommodation.
Euralarm now urges the European Parliament to adopt the final TRAN Committee’s report on new challenges and concepts for the promotion of tourism in Europe. The association fully supports the call on the Commission to come forward with proposals for minimum standards for tourism safety in the EU, in particular in the area of fire safety and carbon monoxide safety in holiday accommodation. Euralarm also acknowledges the need for systematic collection of data on accommodation safety consolidated at EU level.
The European electronic fire and security industry represented by Euralarm is ready to provide support and expertise to the Commission and to the European Standards Organizations (CEN and CENELEC) for the development of relevant legislation and necessary standards to improve fire safety and carbon monoxide safety in tourism facilities. Not adopting strong measures would jeopardise the development of the European Tourism sector and would constitute a missed opportunity to put an end to what in many cases are preventable deaths, injuries and costly damage to property.
The tourism industry is of utmost importance for Europe, contributing substantially to member states’ economies. EU citizens and tourists coming from abroad have a right to expect a high and consistent level of protection in their accommodation when travelling within the European Union. Guaranteeing this level of protection is crucial to remain successful and internationally competitive.
