In a bid to enhance the security of prisons in Maharashtra, authorities have decided to deploy drones for surveillance. In the initial phase, 12 prisons across the state will be monitored using drones, according to the Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Amitabh Gupta.
The drones will help keep a close eye on the movements of inmates inside the jails, providing updates on incidents as well. The drone surveillance program is part of efforts to boost the safety of prisoners in the state. Filming will also be carried out at night, with drones covering Yerwada Central Jail, Kolhapur, Nashik, Sambhajinagar, Taloja, Thane, Amravati, Nagpur, Kalyan, and Chandrapur prisons on a pilot basis. The Maharashtra government has given immediate priority to drone surveillance, in line with an order issued by the Union Home Ministry.
Gupta said the drone surveillance program would help ensure the safety of prisoners in the state’s central and district jails. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Swati Sathe was also present at the press conference where the announcement was made.
The use of drones is expected to provide real-time updates on incidents and movements inside the prisons, enabling authorities to take swift action to ensure the security of both inmates and prison staff.
