Delhi Police’s Special Cell is planning to reconstruct its Lodhi Colony office and a dedicated interrogation room will be a part of the new building. Officers of Delhi Police’s anti-terror unit are planning to send a proposal to the government, pitching for the construction of a multi-storey building in place of the old structure and modernisation of the interrogation room, said sources. The process of drafting a proposal has already begun, said sources, adding that Special Cell officials want the Lodhi Colony police station to be part of the same building.
The elite unit has been facing a space crunch, especially when an accused has to be kept in a cell after being detained or arrested. Sources said that sometimes detainees are kept in the office of the investigating officer due to the space crunch. If the proposal is approved, the unit’s office will have an interrogation room that will be sound-proof, have a two-way mirror and have video recording facilities, said sources.
The Special Cell’s office is divided into southern, northern and southwestern range. The offices are located in New Friends Colony, Rohini and Saket. Due to threats to the Special Cell from various terrorist outfits, the office is guarded by armed men from the unit as well as personnel from the Nagaland police force. In July last year, the Special Cell was alerted by security agencies about a possible terror attack after which police had to install two pop-up spike barriers at its entrance gate.
