With a view to promote road safety, Delhi Police and the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India jointly announced the inauguration of Red Light Violation Detection System and Speed Violation Detection System. The initiative aims to provide safe driving experience to motorists, help pedestrians in crossing the road safely and improve compliance with road traffic rules, thereby reducing accidents and fatalities at junctions.
The systems were launched by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal along with Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, Maruti Suzuki Chairman R C Bhargava and Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa.
The completely automated systems are expected to strengthen the enforcement of traffic rules with transparency and increase awareness on pedestrian safety, while helping in smooth traffic movement. The project is the first of its kind in the National Capital Region.
“The project displays the effective use of technology for better enforcement and creating a culture of compliance of traffic rules. The system will reinforce safety for motorists as well as pedestrians along with enabling smooth flow of traffic and bringing down accidents,” Baijal said in a statement.
Set up along a 14-km corridor between Dhaula Kuan and Sarai Kale Khan on the Ring Road, the systems cover high traffic intensity junctions. There are sophisticated 3D radars and over 100 high resolution cameras to track the presence of vehicles and violation of traffic rules. The cameras capture multiple offences like red light violation, speed violation, stop line violation and wrong-side violation, along with the registration number of the vehicle.
The systems automatically encrypt and transfer the data of violation to the centralized server at the Delhi Traffic Police headquarters in Todapur near Naraina. They also facilitate generation of e-challans along with photo evidence and send it to the violators through SMS or email or post. The systems are capable of 24×7 operation and doing data-analytics and generating trend reports for monitoring system-effectiveness and efficiency. Maruti Suzuki India has invested about Rs 16 crore in setting up the systems, which will be under the charge of Delhi Police. The carmaker along with the implementation partners – DIMTS and Aabmatica – will maintain the systems for two years.
