A new form of identity verification has come to Portland International Airport, and it’s meant to streamline security checkpoints for its members. CLEAR launched at PDX on Friday, Feb. 7, allowing those who sign up an opportunity to verify their identity with their eyes or fingerprints — omitting the need for taking out an ID — before taking an expedited lane through physical security.
“When we opened our new main terminal last summer, we often got asked: Will CLEAR be coming to PDX? Today, we’re excited to deliver that option for our travelers,” said Dan Pippenger, the chief aviation officer at Port of Portland.
CLEAR is available at 59 airports throughout the U.S. and currently serves more than 27 million members. Its launch at PDX is expected to create 53 jobs and generate more than $3 million annually for the local community.
“Technology should make life easier for all, and CLEAR’s approach at PDX reflects that balance enhancing the traveler experience while respecting local policies and the rights of the public,” Portland Metro Chamber President Andrew Hoan said.
To opt in for CLEAR Plus, members will need to pay just over $16 per month with discounts available for active military, veterans, and government officials. There are other pricing options for Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines and American Express Members. Additional family members can be added to a CLEAR Plus account for $119 per adult per year.
“We’re thrilled to bring CLEAR to Portland and help PDX travelers experience a smoother, more predictable journey,” CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker said. “We share PDX’s dedication to enhancing the customer experience and are excited to be part of making travel to and from Oregon faster and easier.”
