As part of the Global effort to synergise security efforts between various bodies, the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) & Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) of the Bangalore Chapter, India hosted the first quarterly joint meeting on 18th July. The delegates were welcomed with a sumptuous lunch by the host CISCO.\
The chapter organised review sessions for crisis management and investigations. They were conducted by Sandeep Kumar, CPP, Secretary for ASIS Bangalore Chapter and Aditya Gurtoo, CPP, Vice Chair for ASIS Bangalore chapter. The sessions were attended by a of total 10 to 12 aspirants from Bangalore including one participant via web link.
The meet was well attended by over 50 Professionals. The welcome note by Secretary OSAC, Poorna was followed by an invigorating session of ‘Integrated Governance Model’ by The Chief Risk Officer of MPhasis, Sethu. The changing times and coordinated efforts to enable business was covered in depth. The scope to emerge out of the physical security domain clearly struck a chord with the audience.
This was followed by a talk by Gopal, SVP, IT Strategy, CISCO, who spoke on the ever changing and reduced cycles of technological innovation with its associated risks and the need to embrace them at an equally rapid pace in order to stay in the forefront which enraptured the audience.
A panel discussion on crisis management was attended by leaders from the security industry in Bangalore. The 4 panel speakers were Ratnakar Bede, CPP, Security Director at Flipkart; Deepankar Chaudhary, in charge of global security, law security and public policy at Caterpillar; Vinod Kumar, Associate Vice President and lead Corporate Security and Investigations at Mphasis, an IT enabled services provider and Vivek Prakash, CPP PCI, PSP, Vice President at Goldman Sachs. They shared challenges and best practises followed at their respective organisations globally.
The discussion was moderated by ASIS member Ashish Nangia, CPP, former chair of the ASIS Bangalore Chapter. The Bangalore Chapter also conducted CPP review sessions for CPP aspirants in collaboration with CISCO Safety, Security and Resilience team. The review sessions were available for members and non-members. For outstation candidates , a web link was provided.
This session was followed by a talk on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning by Rajesh from the IT strategy team of CISCO. The concepts and implementation were validated by a live demo on visitor management, Vehicle tracking and several smart city initiatives that CISCO has implemented with various government bodies and institutions as a part of smart city initiatives enthralling the audience.
The coffee conversation was abuzz with talk of the qualitative presentations keeping the speakers engaged enough to feel proud of the receptivity of the audience. The vote of thanks was proposed by Warren, Chairman, ASIS, Bangalore Chapter, summarising the need for such joint forums to bring out the best in every member.
FSAI organises seminar on ‘Hospital Fire and Safety System Standards
“There is no fire and safety equipment in 60 per cent of the hospitals in the state. All the hospital managements are liable for action as per the Fire Act,” said Director General of Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department (APSDR and FSD) K Satyanarayana.
Fire and Security Association of India organised a seminar on ‘Hospital Fire and Safety System Standards, Implementation and Evacuation Measures’ in case of exigency specially designed programme for the Hospitals’.
Addressing a seminar, Satyanarayana suggested to all the hospitals to implement fire safety systems and following AP Fire Act as well as National Building code. Inaugurating the seminar, former health minister Kamineni Srinivas stressed the need and importance of implementing fire safety systems in hospitals to avoid fire accidents.
He also narrated various fire accidents in hospitals in the country and abroad causing the death of patients and property loss for the hospital management. Dr CV Rao, Vice-Chancellor Dr NTR Health University advised all the hospitals to follow the fire safety norms. KP Dominic, National President of FSAI, stated that the association is a non-profit organisation spreading the cause of fire safety in every walk of life and highlighted the awareness programmes for the schoolchildren conducted in all chapters.
The speakers in the seminar emphasised the root causes of hospital fires, including electrical short circuit, hospital kitchen fires and fire accidents caused due to improper housekeeping and piling of garbage in basement floors. Over 300 delegates from various hospitals, architecture students from GITAM and Andhra Universities attended.
Tech-savvy police force imperative to deal with growing complexity of crimes: Home Minister, Rajnath Singh
Union Home Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, has envisioned a tech-savvy police force capable of providing security to the citizens even as the physical and emotional needs of a policeman are given the care they deserve from senior officers. Inaugurating the 1st Police Expo 2018 & 2nd Young Superintendents of Police Conference 2018, organized by FICCI and Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), on the theme of ‘Predictive Policing & Contemporary Challenges for Indian Police Forces’, Home Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh said, “Predictive policing requires modern technological capability and weapons to deal with the complex crimes that pervade society”.
Talking about the usage of social media and internet, the Home Minister said that handling social media is a huge challenge and “we must ensure maximum positive use of social media”. He also commended the use of less-lethal and non-lethal weapons along with modern weapon systems, use of drones and forensic technology to strengthen the security system.
Mr. Singh laid stress on understanding the emotional and physical constraints and the workload under which the police force has to operate. The Home Minister urged the senior police officers to consider induction of talented students of engineering colleges, IITs and IIMs as interns in police organisations to give them first-hand knowledge of the challenges and requirements of a modern police force so that they could utilize their skills to develop the required technologies. On the occasion, the Union Home Minister released the FICCI – EY Report ‘Predictive Policing and way forward’.
Mr. Rajiv Jain, Director, Intelligence Bureau, advised the young police officers to make the optimal use of the technologies being made available by the government to ensure basic policing in the country. Dr. A. P. Maheshwari, Director General, BPR&D emphasised the role of R&D and data analytics to develop an integrated technological system for dealing with the violation of law and crimes. He said that the Bureau would soon launch a pan-India Crime Victim Survey to gauge the perception of the people with regard to the efficacy of technological applications and their utility.
This is the first time that an expert Screening Committee has been set-up by BPR&D to evaluate the products and technologies offered by industries for subsequent field trials and pilot projects. The aim is to ensure better customization and adoption as per the requirements of Indian police forces.
Mr. Y. K. Modi, Past President FICCI & Executive Chairman, Great Eastern Energy Corporation Ltd. underlined the need to implement police reforms in states and enhance the remuneration of police personnel for effective policing. “The private sector was keen to collaborate with the police force to beef-up the security of the country and its citizens,” he said. Mr. Modi added that the internal security and law and order was vital for economic progress and creation of jobs. Mr. V. H. Deshmukh, ADG, BPR&D and Mr. Rahul Chaudhry, FICCI Homeland Security Chair also shared their perspectives on the subject.
The two-day Expo deliberated on ‘Technologies for Predicting Offenders, Predicting Perpetrators Identities & Predicting Crime Victims’; ‘Safe Cities v/s Smart Cities’; ‘Public Procurement in Internal Security –Way Ahead’; ‘Predictive Policing and Emerging Trends in Cyber Crime’; ‘Next Generation Technologies for SMART Policing’; and ‘Predicting Cyber Crime Against Women’.
Besides the conference, the event comprised a wide exposition of technologies, products and solutions providing a unique B2G platform for Industry and Government. The FICCI – EY Report presents an overview of the prevalence of predictive policing solutions in India, the challenges being faced by Indian agencies and some notable case studies for predictive policing and related projects that have been undertaken by agencies across the country. Predictive policing is indeed the next step of smart policing that enables the agencies to deliver services efficiently and proactively.
