Ahmedabad steps up drive to seal high rises without fire safety

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) intensified its drive against high rises that failed to install fire safety equipment in their premises. The AMC action comes in wake of a contempt petition filed in the Gujarat High Court. The petitioner claimed that despite directions from the high court the AMC had failed to take action in respect of high rises without fire safety. At present, 1,140 high rise buildings are without fire NOC, out of total 2,294 such buildings within AMC limits.

The town development officer (TDO) for New West Zone sealed 45 commercial units of New York tower ‘B’ block, threatening that the building will not be able to open for business, unless proper fire systems are installed and a fire audit is carried out by the owners of the building.

Another AMC team sealed 25 commercial units in Sarjan Towers in Memnagar over an outdated fire safety system. “The owners of Sarjan Towers immediately engaged a fire auditing agency and will submit a report to us soon,” said a senior New West Zone TDO. In the past one week 56 shops were sealed in the New West Zone alone.
