Activists demand urgent fire safety upgrades in Goa markets

In response to the alarming fire incidents in Abids, Hyderabad, and Kasargod in Kerala, worried citizens are urging government authorities to enhance public safety measures.

The shocking footage has raised awareness about the need for stricter fire safety regulations, improved emergency response systems, and increased community education on fire prevention.

The citizens also appealed to the general public to exercise caution when storing and using firecrackers. Speaking to reporters, social activist Prabhav Naik emphasised the need for proactive measures by tagging both District Collectors of Goa, who oversee the State Disaster Management Cell. He demanded that comprehensive preventive strategies be implemented to manage any fire accidents.

“I am fully aware of the absence of proper firefighting equipment in and around Margao Municipal Market. The situation is no better in other markets across Goa. It is now in the hands of the people to prioritise their safety,” he stated.

He further expressed concern about the limitations within the Fire and Emergency Services in Goa, highlighting the inadequacies of the Disaster Management Authority in the State.
“Given the recent fire incidents at Abids Market in Hyderabad and at a temple in Kerala, we must all be worried. It is my duty to alert the citizens,” Naik stated.

He added that Madganvcho Awaaz encourages everyone to celebrate the Festival of Lights while taking necessary safety precautions. “Let us all keep a close watch on our children during Diwali celebrations,” he urged.
