The latest Victims of Crime Survey shows that Gauteng and the Western Cape are the two provinces where residents spent the most money on securing their homes against criminals. The survey that was released in Pretoria is the product of information obtained from about 130,000 households since 2011. The study found that nearly half of South Africans believe that crime is on the rise.
The survey found that one in 10 households employ private security firms.
Just five percent of households have a firearm for protection, these weapons are the most common used in car hijacking, sexual offences, murder and robberies.
