New drive to check illegal security agencies

The traffic branch of the Pune police police has undertaken a drive to check the functioning of the illegal private security agencies in the city to ascertain if these agencies employ any tainted staff. Joint police commissioner Ravindra Kadam SAID that the Pune police have undertaken the drive to check if the agencies are following the norms mentioned in their licence. Similarly, the drive aims to reduce the nuisance of the illegal private security agencies. “We suspect that there could be a few agencies which may be operating despite their licences lapsing,” Kadam said.

Last year, the Pune police cancelled licences of as many as 80 private security agencies in the city and issued show-cause notices to another 100 others for serious lapses such as failing to submit documents and hiring people with a dubious background. Kadam said police will take strong action against persons or private security agencies operating illegally in the city. The drive aims to identify the private security agencies operating illegally in the city. “They could be functioning with a lapsed licence or functioning illegally,” he said.

Proper legal action will be initiated against the errant private security agencies, he added. The Pune police issues licences to private security agencies under provisions of Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005
